Rewalsar Refugee Support Scheme

For a small monthly sum, you can help support a child, a young person, a monk or nun, or an elderly person.
Many Tibetan refugees have settled in Northern India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Although India has been very accommodating, many challenges still remain - not least the difficulty of making a living and building a future in a foreign country, when many lack formal schooling and the skills that they have do not transfer to a new culture.

Tibetans are resourceful people with great inner strength, yet at times the challenges of life as a refugee can be very hard and they receive little financial support from the Indian government - no social security, no healthcare and no pensions for the aged.

We work in the Tibetan refugee community in Rewalsar in northern India, one of the places where Tibetans have settled. Opportunities for employment are limited and the Tibetan community - though strong and resilient - can also face many hardships. This is where your support can be so helpful.

The difference that your support can make to an individual's life is immeasurable -

  • You can give a child the chance to receive a modern education in a Tibetan-run school, whilst also learning about their rich cultural heritage.
  • You can help a young person receive vocational training to help them create their future life.
  • You can help support a monk or nun to follow a spiritual life denied them in their homeland
  • You can help an elderly person live their old age in dignity without fear of poverty.

Money collected in England is sent out to Rewalsar where it is distributed by a local man - Karma Tenzin, who keeps meticulous records of all the transactions.
In August 2014 and January 2016, we visited Rewalsar to meet the people being sponsored and to ensure that the scheme is working effectively

However much you give, it is worth far more in Rewalsar and will make a real difference to the life of the people who receive it. It can be paid monthly, twice yearly or annually, by cheque, bank transfer or standing order. If you would rather not make an ongoing commitment, but would like to give a one-off donation, this also would be greatly appreciated and will be added to other donations.

100% of the money donated goes to the people who will benefit - there are no administration costs at all.

If you would like to make a one-off donation for a sum of your own choice that will go into a general fund to help support someone in need, please do so here -
