The visit to York of Tibetan mastiffs Yang and Zeus.
Why does Tibet need support?
Tibet was invaded by China in 1950. In 1959, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, made the agonising decision to flee to exile in India and to seek justice for Tibetan people.
Since then many thousands more have followed him into exile. Tibetan people still live in fear of political and religious persecution and imprisonment within their own country.
Despite this situation in 2008, the Olympic Games were held in Beijing, regardless of China's ongoing abuse of human rights in Tibet. The same year, The Dalai Lama visited the United Kingdom to spread his message of peace and compassion and heighten awareness of the plight of the Tibetan people.
In response to both of these events, in May 2008 a group of people in York decided to set up
Tibet Support Group York (TSGY)
Our group's aims are -
Raising awareness about Tibet and the Tibetan people.
Fundraising to support Tibetans and Tibetan organisations.
Facilitating links to both individuals and organisations wanting sponsorship.
Increasing understanding of Tibetan; culture, religion and medicine.
We organise a range of events and activities throughout the year and we hope that this website will show you some of the wide range of things we do, including: - Talks by guest speakers - Film screenings - Fundraising - Campaigning - Visits to places with Tibetan connections.
If any of these activities and concerns are of interest to you then please do join us at any of our events, you will be more than welcome!
